WEGCDA and Vision for Youth (V4Y) have launched an e-based web portal known as Soko Mkononi that shall help small and medium enterprises in Uganda and Tanzania access market information and investment opportunities.

Soko Mkononi is a Swahili phrase meaning market in hand. According to the Executive Director (ED) of WEGCDA, Mrs. Elliot Orizaarwa Tumwijukye, the key objective of the web portal is to bridge the business information gaps among the East African Community member states. V4Y, based in Tanzania, was represented at the launch by their boss, Ms Violet Ayub.

The launch that took place at Mama FM (Uganda Media Women Association) main hall in Kisaasi on 27th January 2017 was witnessed by over 100 representatives of women and youth civil society organisations, private sector actors and the media. While officiating at the launch, Mrs. Florence Kata, the former ED of Uganda Export Promotion Board and a private business consultant, thanked WEGCDA and V4Y for the wonderful initiative. She, however, urged the two organisations to keep the portal relevant especially to the grass root women and youth, because they are the most prone to exploitation by middlemen.

The Soko Mkononi portal was funded by GIZ and is available on line at
